How a wine glass can make your drink taste better, according to the Telegraph!
“How do you make an average wine taste better than average? Invest in some great glasses to drink it from. By Victoria Moore
Some might say I have a Glass Problem. I call it diligent research. It is my quest to find the perfect wine glass. That is, an everyday glass into which you can pour practically any wine and expect it to be delivered beautifully expressive on the nose and in focus in your mouth.
This hardly ever happens. Many glasses do the opposite: they take a decent wine and they lose it. Literally. You take a little sniff, hoping for a spine-tingle moment and find… almost nothing. Or perhaps a cloudy imprint of a fugitive scent and a sense of disappointment. Other glasses warp a wine like a fairground mirror, exaggerating the oak or pumping up the pyrazine (that’s the sharp bit of sauvignon blanc that smells of green tomatoes). It’s all in the aromatics, and the way the wine hits your mouth.
A few years ago, in the Dartington Crystal Wine Master Chef’s Taster, I thought I had found a near-perfect tasting and drinking glass.
“The trouble is,” I say to Daniel Primack, a fellow glass nerd and owner of the Marylebone shop Around Wine which sells quite a lot of them, “at £20 each they’re just too expensive.
Daniel twitches slightly. “Too expensive?” Yes. “But how much is the wine you’re drinking? Because my argument would be…”
But Daniel has broken me. He’s slipped a Zwiesel Enoteca Unoaked Chardonnay glass (£31) into the tasting. “The best white wine glass in the shop. Hand-blown titanium crystal,” he declares. It gives the cheap sauvignon a kind of magic stardust on the nose. Damn him. I’ll take two of those (good for unoaked whites and pink champagne, it turns out). I just won’t let them near my friends.”
